Effective communication remains the cornerstone of success in any professional environment, whether in the boardroom or on the training ground.

Throughout my career in football and broadcasting, I’ve witnessed how clear communication can transform team dynamics and business outcomes.

I’ve also experienced the opposite when communication goes badly wrong. I spent three minutes in front of a TV audience of a good few million, doing the hokey-cokey while explaining a team formation on the touchscreen.

In my ear, the Director commanded, “Tony, go Left, no, Tony, go right, Tony, go back a bit, Tony, go forward a bit.” Only at the ad break did I learn that Tony was, in fact, the cameraman!!

Having experienced both sides of communication – as a player receiving instructions and now as a broadcaster delivering messages – these four fundamental strategies consistently help:

This requires developing systems that keep teams engaged with current objectives while building capabilities for future challenges.

The most effective leaders I’ve observed maintain this present focus through:

  • Flexible resource allocation based on immediate needs

However, this approach doesn’t mean ignoring the future. Instead, it’s about understanding that future success is built on present actions.

The key is finding the right balance between immediate action and future planning, a hugely complex challenge that Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United Manager, has undertaken.

Too much focus on the future can paralyze present decision-making while ignoring it altogether leaves organizations vulnerable to change.
