Accomplished Your Goals?

So far, have you truly accomplished the goals you’ve set for yourself?

I regularly encounter people who say they’ve been working hard to improve their function, skill, or attribute but are not improving.

When you delve into the details, you find they have been working tirelessly but doing the same thing they’ve always done. The same inputs equal the same outputs!

We’ve all been there, leading back to the “I can’t do that” and “I’m not good enough” thoughts and beliefs.

As Matthew Syed (table tennis Olympian) wrote in his excellent book “Bounce”, the so-called geniuses of whatever discipline you choose (Sport, the Arts, Business) have all trained for a minimum of 10,000 hours to master their particular field. The difference is that they’ve spent those 10,000 hours working tirelessly at the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 things. Their training/learning/practising is of the highest order and taught by quality teachers and coaches. They do not do the same thing – they do the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 thing for a long time.

I enjoyed a Leadership course by the fantastic Rob Northfield last week in Harrogate. He asked the group about their ability to remember: Do you have a good memory? The consensus in the group was no, and we couldn’t remember more than four or five random new things in a row, maximum. Many ‘I can’t do that’ statements were uttered—mine included!

We were then shown a better technique based on what we’ve been doing for years and years—and guess what—we got better results! Ten minutes later, a couple of attendees who openly said their memory was rubbish reeled off all 21 random objects in perfect sequence! 21! Rob then used the same technique for names with equally impressive results. I’ve been practising this new technique, the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 thing, and the results are astonishing – who’d have thought!

Removing self-imposed limitations is the first step, but practising the 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 thing is another step towards maximising one’s potential.

Unlocking Your Potential

Unlocking Your Potential – Where Do You Begin?

Start by Dreaming Big! Maximising your potential involves self-awareness, personal growth, and strategic action.

Begin by removing any self-imposed limitations. Get rid of that artificial ceiling we impose on ourselves. Identifying and challenging the beliefs that hold you back is essential to reaching your full potential.

Confront thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t do that,” “I lack experience,” and “Failing will be embarrassing,” and look at them with a critical eye!

Reflecting on my childhood in Adelaide, Australia, when I first played football, I remember the freedom to dream without limits. I didn’t dream of playing for Adelaide City, the best team in Adelaide. I imagined winning the World Cup, scoring at Wembley in a Cup Final, and clinching the (now) Premier League title.

While I didn’t win the World Cup—we lost in the 1990 semi-finals—I achieved the other two, and I’m deeply grateful for all my football experiences. Would these achievements have been possible without dreaming big initially? The answer is no.

Your progress toward your goals depends on you, a topic I’ll delve into in future posts. But for now, remember that Dreaming Big is a wonderful starting point. It’s perfectly acceptable, and no one will hold it against you. So, dream big, stay grounded in the present, and remember that the journey requires dedication and effort. Who knows how far towards that dream you can get? The hard work starts now!

Missed Deadline

Why Did Your Employee Miss the Deadline?

What happens when an employee submits a project a day late?

As a manager and a leader, it is essential to understand the reasons behind the actions.

Possible Reasons for their Actions:

1: Personal Challenges:

The employee could be dealing with personal issues, such as a family emergency or health problems, affecting their ability to focus and meet deadlines.

2: Workload Issues:

The employee might have been assigned too many tasks at a time, which caused them to feel overwhelmed and need more time to prioritise effectively.

3: Lack of Clarity:

If the project requirements were unclear or not fully communicated, the employee may have struggled to complete it on time due to confusion about what was needed.

4: Skill Gaps:

Employees might feel inadequate or lack confidence in their abilities for the specific project, leading to procrastination or slower progress.

5: Absence of Support:

If the employee felt unsupported by their team or needed more resources and tools to complete the project, this could have impacted their ability to meet the deadline.

6: Motivational Factors:

A drop in motivation due to a lack of recognition or appreciation for the employee’s past work may have caused them to disengage from their responsibilities.

In this example, addressing the underlying reasons for an employee’s behaviour—through supportive conversations, workload assessments, and clear communication—will lead to better understanding, solutions, and improved performance in the future. Find the real reason “why”.

Clear Communication

Is your Communication Clear?

Open and transparent communication is the backbone of any relationship, whether in your personal or professional life.

My work involves communication skills in keynote speaking, business training, TV punditry, and commentating. While it’s essential to get things right, we’re human, and occasionally, despite years of experience, we still get things wrong!

I was a TV Pundit covering a game for beIN Sport in the Middle East. The live broadcast team comprised various elements in the studio or the adjacent gallery. During the broadcast, we communicated via ‘talkback’, and my earpiece was in and ready for any information or instruction from the Producer in charge. He was one of the best, an Englishman poached from SKY with decades of experience. And so, we went live to millions……

It was the build-up segment before the game. I stood before the giant touchscreen, which showed the tactics each team would likely employ, and started moving players around the screen.

Then, I received my first communication: In my ear, the Producer said, “Tony, move to your left.” So, I duly shuffled to my left.

Again, the Producer was back in my ear, saying, “Tony, no, go to your right.” Another shuffle to the right followed.

Once again, the Producer was back “Tony, go closer, go closer”. So, I stepped within an inch of the giant touchscreen.

I was in the middle of my sermon about the Italian team’s tactics when the Producer’s final instruction landed in my ear: “Tony, go further away.” So, I stepped back to the position I originally started in! I felt like I was doing the Highland Fling while moving players around the touchscreen!!

During the next ad break, I shouted down my microphone to the Producer, “What the hell was that all about?” He replied, “Apologies, the cameraman’s name is also Tony.”

Just when you think you’ve got this communication thing nailed!

Why a Red Card?

Why Did the Player Receive a Red Card?

Imagine a player receiving a red card for a reckless tackle, resulting in the team playing with one less player for the remainder of the match. Why?

As a manager and a leader, it is essential to understand the reasons behind the actions. Was the referee’s decision wrong? Is he just a bad player? A moment of madness? Or are there deeper reasons that led to the player’s action?

Possible reasons:

1: Emotional Reaction:

The player may have been frustrated or angry about a previous tackle or referee decision, which may have clouded his judgment and led to a rash decision to tackle aggressively.

2: High Stakes Pressure:

In a crucial match with high stakes, the pressure to perform well might have caused him to act impulsively to show commitment and determination.

3: Competitive Mindset:

Some players thrive on competition and might push their limits, occasionally leading to overly aggressive plays to assert dominance.

4: Miscommunication:

If a teammate misunderstood positioning or strategy, the player might have believed they were making the right move to protect the goal but needed to be more accurate with the tackle’s severity.

5: Fatigue:

Being physically exhausted from playing may have impaired the player’s ability to make quick, effective decisions, contributing to the poor tackle.

6: Training Practices:

If the team’s training emphasised aggressive play or tackles, it could inadvertently condition players to act in ways that invite fouls during games.

Understanding the context behind a person’s actions can help coaches provide guidance and support, whether in business or sports. Coaches should emphasise emotional control, communication, and strategic play to minimise future incidents on the field.
